Doughnut Innovation

According to Merriam-Webster, a doughnut is “a small usually ring-shaped cake fried in fat.”  Well, I hate to break it to them, but that definition does not give that fine product justice. Growing up, I always knew following the lower school 3:10pm bell ringing would lead to an amazing afternoon snack. Usually we hit up Baskin Robbins…occasionally a local gas station to get a ICEE…but most of the time we hit up this spot called The Donut Den in Nashville, Tn. Wow, weren’t those the good ‘ole days?

That’s what I thought. Well, until I recently heard of this fabulous place in New York called Doughnut Plant. Starting Doughnut Plant in 1994 with his very own grandfather’s recipe, Mark Israel officially transformed the basement of a Lower East Side Tenement Building into a local bakery. His name soon spread across town, and before he knew it Mark was delivering doughnuts on his bike to places like Dean & Deluca and Balducci’s.

The Creme Brulee, Coconut, Tres Leche, & Oatmeal Doughnuts (they were sold out of Blackout!)

In 2000, Mark moved Doughnut Plant out of the basement and into their Lower East Side location. Although he invented the jelly square doughnut, they became well-known for their signature doughnuts: Tres Leches and Blackout, which were both premiered conveniently on Cinco de Mayo.

Best part about this place? They recently opened a new location in Chelsea on Valentine’s Day! I decided to go over and try all of the popular flavors…yet again…I mean, unless you have another bite how will you officially know which one you like the best? Hehe! My favorite? I still can’t decide between the Creme Brulee or the Tres Leches!

Grab some doughnuts, walk down 23rd street to the Hudson Parkway, and enjoy a lazy day of sweet comfort!

Transforming a typical “ring-shaped cake” into something innovative and exciting, Doughnut Plant has flat got the process down. Their loyal customers know what to expect right when they walk into the store…a tummy full of satisfaction. More please.
