Trainin’ to Greenwich

It’s a beautiful day outside. My thoughts—why not a day trip outside the city?  I’m heading to Greenwich!

Off to Grand Central I go, hop on the New Haven line, grab a warm coffee from Dishes to go, and what do you know…in no time flat, I’m on the train to experience a new place!

When I would ask my friends from the area where to go in Greenwich. They all said the same answer: Meli-Melo! Located in the heart of Greenwich Avenue, this well-known Creperie has a menu full of eclectic flavors to fulfill anyone’s expectations. Craving salty or sweet? Done and done!

At the time I was craving salty, and let me just tell you the Sardagna crepe was phenomenal. Perfect way to start this amazing day!

Skip Starbucks. Go straight to Aux Delices for a great coffee perk-up. Filled with an assortment of muffins and other homemade breakfast essentials, the cafe area even has delectable treats such as Bolognese sauces (yum!) and salads that are perfect for on the go or to cook at home later!

Did your New Year’s resolution revolve around eating healthier? Mine didn’t…it probably should have, but I couldn’t help but notice this cute market in the area that specializes in health foods called Greenwich Healthmart (203-869-9658).

Built in 1875, it is the only building on Greenwich Avenue that still has a porch attached onto the front (other buildings took them down to enhance the look of their businesses). The owner said that he tells everyone that he “doesn’t have a red carpet for you at the front to walk in on, but that he sure does have a great red porch!” This family owned store has been opened for over 40 years catering to loyal customers who crowd the place in the morning just to get a fabulous healthy smoothie.

The owner couldn’t have been more welcoming to me there, and showed me how to enhance my own AM breakfast smoothies. His enhancement choices?: Whey protein powder, mixed with frozen fruit, Apple juice, Acai powder, and topped with a squirt of Echinacea, and Gingko. Since I visited him, I make this smoothie every morning and it keeps me satisfied until lunch….so delicious! I wouldn’t hesitate to train back over to Greenwich just to buy more products from this store – it’s one of a kind!

Ella Vickers Recycled Sailcloth Collection was the most interesting store that I walked into all day. Ella, the owner, sailed in Columbia and began making tote bags out of recycled sailcloth. They immediately became popular, which has given her the opportunity to make more products for every customer need.

For example, the wine bottle holder I bought was made in the thought to throw in ice cubes with the wine or even to fit an entire bottle of magnum!

This nautical store carries products that are made from sailcloth that were brought in from the Long Island Sound and are traded for bags in North Carolina, cleaned in Stanford, and sewn back in NC or Brooklyn. The history of where your sail product came from is unknown, but you sure do know it’s had quite a past. It’s the perfect store to find an interesting piece!

Directly behind the Ella Vickers store is a lovely boutique called Back Room Boutique (917-346-2683). They have such an eclectic mix of candles, purses, jewelry, and even products for men!

The owner, Sherry Wyatt, is a former model and is just stunning inside and out. She showed me around the store, pointing out her popular pieces, and the significance behind them.

My favorite pieces were these clutches handmade from a man named Anthony Luciano in Italy. Every bag has a penny sewn inside for good luck, and I couldn’t help but fall in love with them. Little did I know that Meryl Streep is a huge fan as well…

If you feel like you and your friends have become creatures of habit in your ‘hood, break out of that monotone lifestyle and explore something new!  Pick the perfect day trip or follow my lead and go to Greenwich on a Sunday and experience something new!
