Feelin’ the Soul

A Southern girl can’t deny her Southern roots. Especially when it comes to Southern soul food! The good news is that I’ve finally found my nitch up here in the big apple to keep the Southern flame alive inside. Two words say it all: City Grit.

Located in an old Nolita school house between Mott St. and Mulberry St., chef Sarah Simmons {from Food & Wine} and her business partner, Jeremie Kittredge, have recently created an underground culinary salon for New Yorkers. They described the experience as “a gathering of people under the roof of an inspiring host, held partly to amuse one another and partly to refine taste.” Cool, right? These ticketed {usually $45 per person} dinners seat 70 people in one room enhanced with candlelight {my favorite lighting!} and detailed woodwork from Brooklyn artisans…plus, everything you see is for sale!

Thrown a few times a month, City Grit brings you the best of Chef Sarah’s creativity in the kitchen as well as other fabulous chefs from around the country to enhance their supper events {with a little Southern twang, of course!}.

I recently went to a City Grit dinner called Breakfast for Dinner. Expecting fluffy pancakes, Vermont maple syrup and touch of eggs was anything but was tossed onto my vintage-like plate. My top 3 favorites from the 5 course menu that night?:

Latkes with apple + sour cream

Kale salad with dried cherries, pears, granola and maple vinaigrette

Pimento cheese grits with bacon marmalade

Let’s just say I’m glad I’m an avid follower of Barry’s Bootcamp, Bikram Yoga, and SoulCycle! Even wines offered on the menu are incredibly affordable {all under $50}, and I was so excited about the drink of the night: a vodka orange juice concoction!

With Jeremie Kittredge

Although the food was stellarly delicious, my friend, Jordan, and I chatted after dinner about how much we enjoyed the company more than anything! The communal tables at City Grit allow you to meet people from NYC that you would have never encountered otherwise. All interesting. All foodies!

City Grit is on it with cool events and opportunities to meet new people in a chill setting {click here to see this month’s calendar!} over Southern flavors. Totally Feelin’ the Soul.
