I hate to break it to you, but requesting the phrase, ‘full bodied,’ is not only used when ordering a glass of fine wine.
Having a big, volumptuous bouffant is the in thing at the moment, and teasing my hair has always been an essential part of my every day routine. Growing up down South, it was incredibly common to find a hair stylist who knows exactly how to give you a “bigger the hair, closer to heaven” look. But after moving up to New York, I found that it was much harder to communicate with a stylist on how high I desired my locks to be and which products for locs to use. Usually I have to bring my very own teasing comb into a salon up here, and literally show the hair stylist how I was taught at a young age to tease…well, except for a few stylists that I consistently visit and now know how I love it!
So, I thought on a recent visit to Nashville that I would visit my absolute favorite hair salon in town called The Hair Salon that is located directly above a very posh store called Jamie, and get my teasing queen stylist, Jill Scissom, to help me show y’all precisely how it’s done. Half the fun with getting my hair done at Jamie is visiting their beautiful salon!
Two of the best masterminds behind teasing: Jody and Jill Scissom
Before we got started, Jill told me about a cool new product from Kevin Murphy called Powder Puff. If you haven’t used this before, it’s a must that you purchase this asap…it magically gives your hair volume before any teasing comb is used! I was shocked at how fast this product worked….
Before Powder Puff…
After!
All you have to do with your Powder Puff is to take the crown section of your hair, throw on some of the magic, and rub the powder with your fingers in a circular motion. Hola!
Starting at the top of your crown, take 2 inch pieces, and spray on some hair spray into the roots. Then take your teasing comb and start from midway between your ends and scalp, and push the comb towards your scalp multiple times.
We had such a fun time teasin’!
After you finish that section, slowly move down the back of your head. Repeating the same process. Once you get to the middle section on the back of your head you are all finished! Take my best friend: HAIR SPRAY (preferably by Moroccan Oil or Shaper Plus) and generously spray all over your hair. Then take the end of a regular comb, and use the spikes on the end to “raise the roof” even more. Don’t be scared…your hair will fall as the day goes on, so if you can get it huge the volume will last even longer!
Don’t be nervous to play around with teasing! I usually wear my hair down after I get the volume to a desired height, but teasing is also a great foundation for making a quick up do as well!
After the teasin’, we decided to play around with the curling iron to add a little sugar ‘n spice to the bouffant! {Note: When you use a curling iron, manually wrap your hair around the barrel}
Jill has an amazing talent of taking my fine hair, and making it appear thick and full!
Finishing touch?…
MORE hair spray! Bring.It.On. Moroccan Oil hair spray smells like a dream, and makes your hair extra shiny and beautiful!
Besides the Powder Puff and Moroccan Oil hair spray, here are more of my favorite hair products that Jill uses on me. Here’s the Batanabio contact to access their organic products. Just remember, “Bigger is always Better!”:
Directly after washing my hair, I always put in this Davines mousse
After the mousse, I squirt some of this Davines Sea Salt Primer in my hair before blow-drying
ALWAYS blow-dry your hair with a round brush and a ceramic hair dryer! Lets just say that it’s a “Frizzy Lizzie” day if I don’t use these two essentials.
My favorite type of teasing comb!
If you want to add a little salt ‘n pepper after your blowout and teasing then purchase a curling iron!
I hope that my teasing tips help you walk out the door looking like you were born and bred below the Mason-Dixon line! I can guarantee you will have heads turnin’ in awe of your fabulous ‘do…
